3 Habits You Should Get Into

Hey hey hey it’s Tuesday! Hope you’re doing well, today I’d like to talk about something I’m passionate about, because it’s something I’ve struggled with for as long as I can remember. Depression and anxiety. Through work with my doctor, a lot of research, trial and error I have been living, happily, without medication for about 11 years. Just before I got pregnant with my oldest daughter was the last time I was in to see my doctor in regards to this topic and that was the last time I tried any medication to help with it (medications don’t work for me, they make me tired, I have crazy dreams and sleep walk while on them, not good). Now, I am not a doctor, you should always consult with a trusted doctor in regards to your mental health issues, but this post isn’t meant as a substitute for a doctor’s care but rather, encouragement or maybe a good habit or two to pick up, and get yourself into! I’ve got three of, what I would consider, my top habits, that help me to keep depression and anxiety at bay. I’m going to keep these points pretty short and to the point, if you have any questions feel free to email me or leave a comment. 🙂

  1. Keep your home, room, etc. clean and clutter free. I know what you’re thinking, “I barely have the energy to function day to day” (for those of you that haven’t struggled with depression or anxiety, it leaves you feeling tired and without motivation to do a whole lot). Let me challenge you with this, do you go to work or school everyday that you’re asked to, barring sickness or things of that nature? Probably. That same thing that you use in your brain to get yourself to work/school everyday even when you don’t want to go, employ it for getting yourself up and working on cleaning/organizing your space. There’s tons of research on why keeping your home clutter free and clean is so good for our brains, it’s a necessity for those of us struggling with anxiety or depression. You have got to make it a priority if you want to up your quality of life. Get into a routine of cleaning your entire house once a week, or a little each day, etc. (whatever works) and be sure to keep it up. Get rid of things regularly, don’t let things collect and clutter up the home. Decorate your space, make it pleasing to your eye. Remember to open your curtains and blinds EVERY SINGLE DAY! Let the light in, it’s good for you. Make your home, where you spend so much time, work for you and your mental health.
  2. Deal with your finances. Say what? You heard me. No, I’m not talking about growing a money tree, if you figure that out though, let me know. What I mean is, if you’ve got outstanding balances, bills in collections, hospital bills, credit card bills, etc. whatever is causing financial worries, make a plan. I realize that if you had all the money to pay all these bills, you wouldn’t have these problems, I get that. You don’t have to have all the money, but you CAN still make a plan! Call the debt collectors, set up payment plans, create a spreadsheet with all of your bills, income, etc. and sit down once a week to pay bills. Debt collectors WILL work with you, call them! Proactively sitting down to do bills weekly or each payday, whatever works will give you financial peace in knowing that you’re dealing with anything in this category that might cause excessive stress and anxiety.
  3. Exercise and get outside (or do both together)! Vitamin d is good for us, we all already know that so I’m not going to go too far into detail but try and be outside for 15 minutes a day (or more!) soaking up that natural light. Also, exercise, we know it helps with anxiety and depression in so many ways, I’m not going to go too far into this either. Make it a point to get your heart rate up for at least half an hour a day. I know you’re tired, I know you’ve got a lot to do, but so does everybody else. Being busy isn’t a new or profound thing, this is something most adults deal with. Honestly, I’ve got excuses too, I use them on occasion, keep in mind, anxiety and depression love our excuses. If there were a breeding ground for more depression and anxiety, it would be our excuses. Even if you wearily trudge down to the gym, or outside for a walk, run, etc. at least you made a good choice to do something amazing for your mental and physical health, HUZZAH!

Those are my tips for today, I hope they inspire you to clean up, declutter, open your windows, go for a walk, etc. I just want to remind you to be gentle with yourself, but also make good choices that will help your mental health, even when it’s hard. You’re worth it! These things have helped me over the years to gain control over my mental health and it has been so amazing. We are all different, so maybe things look differently for you, that’s okay. I’m not telling you that you’re like me and what worked for me will cure you of all your ailments, not at all. I do sincerely hope that you can glean something useful from what has helped in my situation. Cheers friends, and until Friday! 🙂
